Did you know, 1 in 4 young Australians will experience a mental health issue but the majority of them won’t seek help. There are many reasons why, but stigma plays a major role. New research has revealed how stigma is preventing many young Australians from seeking help:
- 26 per cent of young people aged 12 – 25 would not tell anyone about a personal mental health issue
- 52 per cent of young people were embarrassed to discuss a mental health problem with anyone
- Nearly half (49 per cent) were afraid of what others would think
- 22 per cent would be unlikely or very unlikely to discuss it with their family doctor.
There are many reasons why, but stigma plays a major role. Stigma is all the misconceptions, beliefs and fears held about getting help for mental health issues. Not seeking help can have negative effects like making it harder to finish study, get a job and maintain friendships.
You can help tear it down for good.
The more we share, the more we talk, the more we tear it down.
